MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota. Scientific American recently reported on a study that links the development of autism with maternal high blood pressure or diabetes. Women who have diabetes are at the greatest risk of giving birth to a child with autism. Yet diabetes was not the only condition that the researchers found linked to autism. Women who had high blood pressure or preeclampsia also ran a higher risk of giving birth to a child with autism. Children born to mothers with preeclampsia were found to have a 50% higher risk of developing autism. Babies born to mothers with high blood pressure were also at an increased risk of developing ADHD.
What are some causes of high blood pressure? According to WebMD, some of the preventable causes of high blood pressure include smoking, lack of exercise, too much salt in the mother’s diet, older age, genetics, kidney disease, thyroid disorders, and sleep apnea. Stress was also a noted cause of high blood pressure.
It is well documented that being in a car accident while pregnant can cause risks to the fetus. But can stress resulting from a car accident pose other, previously unidentified risks? Scientists may have to study the role that stress plays in the development of autism and ADHD, but currently the research suggests that many of the links between autism and diabetes or high blood pressure are due to genetic factors.
The studies also failed to correlate the role that mental illness might play in the studies. The findings are quite preliminary and it would be too soon to say that either diabetes or high blood pressure causes autism.
According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, fetal trauma due to car accidents are the leading cause of fetal death. Car accidents can pose a serious risk to the developing fetus and also to the mother. If you are pregnant and are involved in a car accident, however minor it may seem, it is always wise to seek medical attention afterward. Blood loss, tissue damage, fractures, and other injuries can lead to injuries of the fetus.
If you or a loved one was injured in a car accident, seek medical attention as soon as possible. If you are suffering due to the loss of your baby or if you suffered injuries to your fetus as a result of a car accident, you may have rights under the law.
